Tiwi Islander playwright Jason de Santis has been commissioned by the Festival to create his new play which will premiere at the 2011 Darwin Festival.
Using Tiwi language in rhyming verse, song, dance and puppetry, Wulamanayuwi tells the story of a young girl and her experiences with the spirit-beings of a mystical, dreamtime land. This enchanting work draws intriguing parallels with the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - yet undeniably preceded by the Tiwi version.
With the support of Green PC and Infoxchange the Festival has provided Jason with a laptop computer to complete the play script. This generous support enables Jason to continue writing in the environment which inspires his story.
You’ll able to get a sneak preview of this delightful new production this year, with a reading of the play planned for the 2010 Festival program.
