Melbourne artist Jess Locke is known for penning indie pop tracks that are at times subtle and full of melancholy, at times delivered with an acerbic tongue, but always steeped heavily in narrative. Her raw and honest storytelling and poetic inclinations have seen her heralded as one of the country’s most exciting emerging indie rock stars, pushing her way to the front of the pack of talented Aussie artists.
Her recently released third album, Don’t Ask Yourself Why traverses themes of human behaviour, egos and self-reflection. Jess and bandmates James Morris and Chris Rawsthorne worked with producer Rob Muinos (Saskwatch, Julia Jacklin), to record the album in a tiny studio in the back of a guitar shop in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, before it was mastered by John Davis at Metropolis in the UK (Lana Del Ray, The Killers, Gorillaz).
See her perform at The Rails with support from electro-pop artist Broadwing.
‘Balancing introspective reflection with pop-skewed accessibility.’
‘An absolute corker… self-aware, tongue-in-cheek.’
