Presented by Opera Australia and Darwin Entertainment Centre in association with Darwin Festival

A man enchanted by the beauty of the East. A woman in love with the promise of the West.

Separated by a vast ocean and many years, what will become of their love?

Opera Australia returns with Puccini’s popular opera. Filled with gorgeous music from the lovers’ first rapturous embrace to the intense finale, Madama Butterfly is a love story that reaches across cultures, across oceans, across time.

A US Naval officer becomes enchanted with the beauty and freedoms of Japan. He decides to take a wife, and when the gorgeous geisha, Butterfly, arrives, he is transfixed by her charms. She falls hopelessly in love, and a passionate marriage begins. Years later, the officer has returned home and, abandoned by her family, Butterfly waits faithfully for her husband to return.

One of Australia’s greatest theatrical minds, John Bell, directs this production, that will transport you to exotic Japan with its stunning costumes and sets. Opera Australia’s magnificent cast perform the Japanese and American-inspired music, including the famous aria ‘Un bel di vedremo’, accompanied by a chamber orchestra and a children’s chorus drawn from local communities.
