We’re kicking off our music program in The Lighthouse with the enigmatic Mojo Juju. This killer vocalist, songwriter and musician has been making huge waves in the last year and returns to Darwin hot off her SXSW appearance, where she wowed audiences and was declared by The Chicago Tribune as one of the 12 best up-and-coming bands and artists.
2018 saw Mojo Juju drop her biggest album yet, garnering rave reviews for the brutally honest title track ‘Native Tongue’ and its accompanying video, amassing new fans along the way. With its a powerful mix of the personal and the political all wrapped up in a dynamic performance, the album pays homage to her identity as a Filipino Wiradjuri woman. It has collected a healthy bundle of accolades, including three ARIA Award nominations, the J Award for Best Music Video and the Dreamtime Award for Best Female Artist.
Seamlessly mixing soul, blues, hip hop and pop, Mojo Juju’s music is simply stunning – and to experience it live is truly special. Her unique velvet yet gravelly voice and driving riffs get the dance floor pumping, but she can also deliver a ballad with intoxicating charm.
‘Mojo reaches deep on these songs and lays more of herself on the line than many others would have the guts to do.’
