Shakespeare & Symphony
Darwin Symphony Orchestra
Epic, romantic and deeply human, this world premiere concert-theatre production reveals why Shakespeare’s stories continue to resonate across centuries.
Under the musical direction of Darwin Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Richard Mills, orchestral masterworks inspired by the Bard are woven with live spoken performance by acclaimed actors Rob Collins and Ursula Yovich to bring Shakespeare’s words vividly to life.
Shakespeare’s works have inspired some of the most magnificent music ever written, and this program celebrates that legacy with drama, beauty and emotional depth. The tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet is explored through the music of Berlioz and Tchaikovsky, while Mendelssohn’s sparkling score illuminates the mischievous magic of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The evening culminates in Vaughan Williams’ radiant Serenade to Music, performed by Darwin vocal ensemble Vocalective. This luminous work sets Shakespeare’s lyrical reflections on harmony from The Merchant of Venice to music, offering a moving tribute to the power of art and connection.
Directed by Brown’s Mart Artistic Director Yvette Walker, a proud Waanyi woman, and with creative development support from Shari Sebbens (director of Top End Bub and star of The Sapphires), the production is shaped by a creative team deeply rooted in the Territory’s artistic community. Presented in collaboration with Darwin Festival and Brown’s Mart, this unforgettable event offers a bold fusion of orchestral music and theatre. It’s a celebration of Shakespeare’s enduring influence, the expressive power of live performance and the richness of storytelling through sound and word.
Whether you're a lover of classical music, theatre or timeless tales, this production promises an evening of emotional resonance, artistic brilliance and cultural celebration.
