DEEJAY X DANCER

More Info

Inspired by the legendary block parties of 1970’s New York, acclaimed choreographer Nick Power pays tribute to hip hop’s origins in a thrilling call and response showdown.

Deejay x Dancer pits world champion turntablist DJ Total Eclipse (AB Original, Funkoars) against three killer Australian breakers – Anastasios Repousi, Justice Crew member and winner of Australia’s Got Talent; Jackson Garcia, member of breaking crews Skill at Will and Team Cream; and Demi Sorono from So You Think You Can Dance.

Deejay x Dancer walks the tightrope of live performance in a celebration of the intricate interplay between dancer and the decks that highlights the skill, playfulness and connection between these two traditional hip hop forms. Riffing on this initial spark from the birth of hip hop culture almost 50 years ago, this high-energy event merges past and contemporary influences to push the boundaries of the form. It continues Nick Power’s exploration of hip hop’s rituals and origins, following on from his past hit works in Darwin including Cypher, Between Tiny Cities and Block Party at The Lighthouse.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the playfulness and sense of community from hip hop’s origins, this one’s for you! Grab your crew and join us for an uplifting, energetic night of dance.
